This dainty baroque arch with delicate carvings was erected in one night in 1615 by Elector Frederick V, as a surprise gift for the birthday of his wife, Elizabeth Stuart of England. With a guided tour I visited its interior (I even had to queue to gain entrance, this is a really popular sight). Richard Wagner fans are familiar with Wartburg Castle from his opera Tannhäuser. Wartburg castle, overlooking the town of Eisenach, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was only in the 1950s an extensive reconstruction work was carried out inside this beautiful castle. He sought refuge at Wartburg Castle after he’d been declared a heretic and sentenced to death by the Holy Roman Emperor in the 16th century.
