I don't have a grey ink that really approximates De Atramentis Charles Dickens (or Cement Grey)! Sheen: ✮✩✩✩✩⠀ Iris is a rich neutral purple similar to Royal Purple that is quite wet but with ✨ limited gold sheen (only a little visible on the writing with more on the swatches) and also⛱ limited shading.⠀
The ink is decently wet for your average ink but slightly dryer than normal for Sailor. Ferris wheel Press Lady Rose has a little more grey to it but is still more pale than grey as well as more pink with less blue.⠀

Specially formulated for hand-writing and perfectly suited for fountain pens, Tomoegawa Paper Company's 100 year history has led to this exquisite, ultra-thin paper. Akkerman Simplisties Violet 13 is much more magenta and with a lot more sheen that leans green.⠀ The 2B does make a dark enough line on Tomoe River though so I don’t think there is an objective issue with this pencil on this paper. Kingdom Note Hitamuki is another ink I bought when I was in Japan in 2018 - it was the first ink I bought there (I think)!
Bleeding: ⠀ Flow: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✮✩⠀ Another common issue with Tomoe River, especially with sheeny inks, is smudging and wetter inks taking longer to dry. ⠀⠀ I don’t have a strong opinion of this either way; I use Hobonichi’s 4mm dot grid and Rhodia’s 5mm dot grid daily and I don’t really have a preference.The benefit of Tomoe River is that the paper is super smooth to write on but not so smooth that it exacerbates baby’s bottoms or other problems with pens that might cause skipping. The paper uses 4mm dot grid spacing which is the same as what Hobonich compared to the 5mm of Rhodia’s dot grid. ⠀⠀

I much prefer my greys to be colourless, how about you?⠀ De Atramentis Charles Dickens is a rebottle of De Atramentis Cement Grey. Water resistance is limited but there is a faint line and chromatography is a rather boring purple gradient of saturation.⠀ ⠀⠀ Bungubox L'Amant has more contrast, is a little richer, with a little more blue in the darker parts as well as a stronger green sheen. Tomoe River Paper is renowned for its smooth texture that is perfect for fountain pens despite only being 52gsm. ⠀⠀
