It's all about the psalms of Ascent. It seems to me that Daniel aligned his own life with the what he saw God doing. Is God speaking to you today? A good read. He had become the most powerful man in the world. In the Western Church - Discipleship is the weakest link left over from the rationalist era. I have read it with a book group for an evening's discussion. Eugene Peterson described the Christian life “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.” Peterson is championing the kind of life that stands in stark contrast to that of King Saul’s in the Bible. Of course Peterson cannot perfectly convey what is necessary for the Christian life, but he does attempt the task. He will restore you too. But, he just couldn’t seem to surrender his pride fully to God no matter how often God spoke to him!

I have been very much enjoying it since as a very helpful commentary on the 15 psalms of ascent.

I first heard the phrase “a long obedience in the same direction” when I read a book by Eugene Peterson by that title. While I that it is possible to follow Jesus without being part of a regular worshiping community, I think that it is extremely difficult to continue following Jesus long term without one… And I think that the church as a whole is diminished when we fail to recognise the way that we together are one body.You are already here… ? If you had asked any person in the known world of Daniel’s day, “Who is the least likely person in the world to surrender his life to God?” – I think almost 100% would have said, “King Nebuchadnezzar, of course.”  But, one of the things that has fascinated me in the Book of Daniel is that God had a different view of the king. I remember when I was in grade school and went to one of my cousin’s high school graduations in Marlinton, WV. That together, we not only follow Jesus but continue his ministry, follow his example and embody his presence in our community today.When we gather here in this place, share together in all of these things, this forms us as a body, bringing our own unique gifts and shapes us together to be more and more like Jesus.
