This is the National Day of Liberia and commemorates Liberia's Independence from the USA and adoption of the constitution on July 26th 1847.

This public holiday commemorates the country’s independence from the American Colonization Society in 1847. On this day, in 1847, our nation declared its independence and proclaimed the freedom of its people.

Because the date falls on Sunday, a presidential proclamation has called for the day to be observed and celebrated as a national holiday throughout the country on Monday, July 27. As a boy over 40 years ago in Liberia, independence day was like Christmas …. It is an important day in Liberia and important for Liberians in the Diaspora. This makes it the only other national capital to be named after a U.S. President; Washington, D.C. being the other.The settlers faced immense hardships in the initial years with atrocious mortality rates due to disease and conflict with the indigenous peoples.

As we reflect on this day, let us remain united, remembering that in union strong, success is sure.We are challenged by the difficulties of Covid-19, and many of us face daily challenges to live the lives we desire and fulfill our dreams.

Within twenty years, the colony had grown and established economic stability.On July 26th 1847, the settlers issued a Declaration of Independence and promulgated a constitution.

In spite of these difficulties, let us remain determined and stand united to defeat Covid-19, for it cannot and must not defeat us.

The proclamation by President George Weah also outlined that the official program in observance of the day will be held on … and it is still viewed that way.

Today, after 173 years of existence, we remain determined and courageous even after a 15-year civil war and two public health disasters – Ebola and Covid-19. Official U.S. diplomatic recognition came in 1862. The anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration and accompanying Constitution is celebrated as Independence Day in Liberia. In 1824 the colony was named Liberia, and the main settlement was named Monrovia, which remains the present-day capital.Monrovia is named in honour of U.S. President James Monroe, who supported the colonization of Liberia by the American Colonization Society.
