Meals, hygiene, respite from the streets, engagement activities, and legal counsel New Avenues’ Drop-In Day Services Center is a safe space where youth experiencing homelessness can receive three meals a day, six days a week, as well as access to showers, laundry, clothing, drug and alcohol recovery and mental-health supports, … While representing 13% of the general population nationally, Black people make up more than 40% of individuals experiencing homelessness. One of the many areas impacted are our social enterprises. We know that institutionalized white supremacy and anti-Blackness have persisted for centuries and that we must remain committed to continuous anti-racist values and actions.The intersection of race and homelessness is stark and undeniable. New Avenues’ Promoting Avenues to Employment (PAVE) program offers robust job training and employment services to youth at-risk of or experiencing homelessness, helping them build the skills to find career-pathway employment and achieve self-sufficiency. Each participant is assigned to a PAVE Employment Specialist, who provides support and connects them to appropriate services, including paid work experiences, financial assistance with occupational trainings and licenses, access to interview clothes and transportation assistance, and one-on-one job and college assistance and support.JRT graduates and youth participating in other New Avenues programs receive group and/or individual mentoring from members of the business community as they set goals and explore career and educational opportunities.© 2020 New Avenues for Youth.
