The nib was too small for the pen and really looked something of an embarrassment every time I opened the pen to write. This is just a great looking and writing fountain pen. Rather, they were like waymarks along the path, some leading to dead ends and others to a seemingly endless onward journey. But the reality is I just wouldn’t ink it up.Not including the converter in a $221 (list) pen is unforgivable and makes me wonder what else they cut corners on.

I like almost everything about this pen. Then I realized my Cross Verve came before this one so that puts this one joining me in 2009 or later. Back in my youth the Cross brand had a certain luxury cache’ to it because of this, but by the time I acquired this pen that had long worn off.I don’t have a record or recollection of where or when I acquired the pen. Trying again for the full-page-of-A4 test, the pen kept going but after then standing the capped pen upright in a pen cup for 20 minutes, it hard-started again and needed several good shakes. And this, perhaps more than anything else about Cross pens, is what I think keeps them from being top-of-mind with a lot of fountain pen aficionados. The pen looked very handsome in the glass topped counter of the department store. Tweet. Once filled from a bottle, it seemed that the pen might not always make it to the end of a page of A4 paper without suffering from ink starvation. Die Verpackung des Federhalters ist so eng verklebt, dass beim öffnen der Kasten beschädigt. I think the Apogee is the best looking pen Cross has put out in a while, but the nib is a bit disappointing, at least as far as size. Not that I am upset or anything, but my experience with Cross is that they are great, long lasting pens – excellent for daily use and on the go travel – stylish, durable, and great pocket pens. I chose the Cross on the basis of three points: first, it's brass barrel provides a little extra mass that resin-bodied pens lack, which tends to smooth out my writing and lends a feeling of heft and quality; second, the cap locks on securely both when covering the nib and when placed on the end of the pen while writing; and third, the gold nib seems to write smoother than the stainless-steel versions (which I also tested before purchasing). The ink is not permanent. I lost patience with the pen and put it away. Cross offers a range of ball-point refill sizes and colors; Selectip gel rolling balls, porous-points (felt tips), ball-points and document markers; 0.5mm pencil leads; specially formulated cartridges and bottled inks. “Cross” is engraved into the nib along with some decoration that gives the nib a bit of a feather look. It has remained my only Mont Blanc pen as I find it never reliably performs, with skips and starts, lack of constant flow etc. Fit and finish are top-notch, as one would expect.

The journey is always an interesting one. …
